چکیده

Habitat preferences and foraging strategies affect population-level space use are therefore crucial to understanding population change implementing spatial conservation management actions. We investigated the breeding season habitat preference site fidelity of under-studied threatened, Baltic Sea Caspian Terns (Hydroprogne caspia). Using GPS devices, we tracked 20 adult individuals at two colonies, in Sweden Finland, from late incubation through chick-rearing. Analyzing movements during this period, describe trip characteristics for each colony, daily metrics effort, use, fidelity. found that time spent away colony increased throughout season, with colony-level differences terms distance travelled per day. In general, terns selected shallow waters between 0–5 meters depth certain using inland lakes foraging. show, first time, individual faithful sites highly repeatable their regarding These results fill important knowledge gaps at-risk population, extend our general ecology widespread species.

Larger foraging range but similar habitat selection in non-breeding versus breeding sub-Antarctic penguins

For land-breeding marine organisms such as seabirds, knowledge about their habitat use has mainly been gained through studies of breeding individuals that are constrained to return frequently to their breeding grounds. In this study we set out to measure whether: a) habitat selection in the non-breeding period predicts habitat selection in the breeding period, and b) whether breeding individual...

Foraging, growth and habitat choice in turbid water: an experimental study with fish larvae in the Baltic Sea

Eutrophication is a large problem in many marine and brackish-water areas. One of the consequences is algae-induced turbidity affecting visually feeding organisms, and behavioural changes of fish and other animals are common in turbid water. The aim of this study was to compare the performance of larval pike Esox lucius in turbid and clear water. We experimentally studied habitat choice, prey a...

Some biological indices of the Alosa caspia (Eichwald, 1838) in the southern Caspian sea (Mazandaran Province)

The present research aimed to study some biological parameters of  Alosa caspia Caspian Sea in the southeast Mazandaran Province in 2014-2015. A total of 600 samples were examined during this period and data were analyzed using SPSS software. The results showed that the mean fork length and total weight of A. caspia was 24.22 ± 54.2 cm and 167.63 ± 63.59 g, respectively, and the length and weig...

Population dynamics of Caspian sand smelt (Atherina caspia) in Gorgan Bay-southeastern Caspian Sea

This study was carried out to investigate population dynamic of Caspian sand smelt (A. caspia) based on a monthly sampling in northern coast of Gorgan bay, between the estuary and canal of Khozeini, during its migration to coastal areas from March to September 2017. A total of 800 samples were collected using beach siene. Length frequency analysis revealed that there is significant difference b...
